Preparation of your Quilt

Preparation of your quilt top and backing is very important if you want a good outcome when quilted. Please take the time to read and follow these guidelines.

Quilt Top

  • Your quilt top should be free of embellishments such as buttons, charms, etc.  (These can be sewn on after it is quilted)

  • Square your quilt top using your quilting /cutting ruler.  ( I use my 6.5 x 24” ruler or a large square ruler )

  • Make sure that all threads are trimmed on the back and front of the quilt top to avoid showing threads through lighter fabric, and to avoid a tangled mess when quilting.

  • Press quilt top, especially seams. Try and have seams pressed open or to one side to be flat as possible.  ( I will give it a very quick press when received, for any creases )

  • Please indicate the top of your quilt with a note and safety Pin.

  • Please do not baste or pin quilt layers as they are loaded separately onto the quilt machine.   (except for pin identifying top of quilt)

      Please Note:

      • I do charge extra for preparing a quilt if the above preparation has not been done by you.

      • Quilt tops that do not lay flat may have tucks, pleats or fullness in your finished quilt.

        Backing

        • Backing  must be squared up, making sure that all edges are straight and  corners are at right angles (check with your quilting ruler). This is especially important when using pieced backing.

        • Backing must be 4 inches bigger than your quilt on each side Eg 70 x 70 inches quilt top =  backing 78 x 78 inches. This applies to your wadding also.

          Please Note:

          • If backing is not large enough and I have to sew on leaders, a fee of $15.00 per leader, no exceptions, will be added.

          •  Iron backing and have all seams pressed open for a smoother finish.   ( I will give it a very quick press when received for any creases )

          • If your backing is directional, please indicate the top of your quilt with a note and safety Pin.

I do have a small selection of 108 inch wide backing that can be purchased via my online shop or you can supply your own.      (If supplied by my shop no charges will apply for preparation.)

              Wadding

              • Wadding must be 4 inches bigger on each side of the quilt. Eg 70 x 70 inches quilt top =  backing 78 x 78 inches.

              • Wadding should not be larger than your backing fabric and be squared up also.
